This Colonial or Kentucky flintlock pistol has a medium size grip for a man's hand, angled to point instinctively. Assembled from pistol parts by the late William Kennedy. The barrel has Mr. Kennedy's WK touch mark at the breech, but it does not appear to be fully assembled by him. The lock still retains the original matte gray finish and was never polished, and has developed a few scattered brown speckles. The lock and tang bolts are also not finished. The pistol was assembled with a small Siler flintlock, brass furniture, and a swamped octagon barrel.
The 9" Getz barrel is .54 caliber rifled for a .530" round ball and patch. The bore is rifled with seven lands and grooves, is bright and has been well maintained. A brass front sight and rear sight are dovetailed to maximize the sight radius. Both sights could be fitted better in the dovetails, with a gap between the bottom of the blade and barrel on the front. The rear sight has some daylight visible below the dovetail.
Stocked in curly maple, the stock has a golden brown color. The medium size grip swells slightly at the end, for a comfortable fit in your hand. Trimmed in brass furniture, the grip is fitted with a brass buttcap, and a short muzzle cap protects the wood at the muzzle. The muzzle cap is not secured in place and can be moved by hand. The ramrod does not have any tips for threaded accessories.
Ignition is provided by this small Siler flintlock. Finished to the as issued matte gray the lock plate has a few small speckles, and the frizzen face shows only a few strikes. Neatly fitted to the stock the lock plate stands well above the wood panel, and is chamfered along each edge, causing a shadow around the lock plate. The lock is well tuned ans sparks very well when fitted with a 5/8" knapped English flint #FLINT-ENG-5. Notice the attractive curled trigger, pinned high for best leverage. This trigger has a smooth easy release.
